Dog rose
The genus name Rosa is the ancient name for roses and has been used for centuries in many European languages. The species name canina means “of the dog” and is associated with the old belief that the plant’s roots were used to treat bites from rabid dogs. The dog rose is well known for its attractive flowers and its characteristic fruits, known as rose hips.
Dog rose is a deciduous, perennial shrub belonging to the family Rosaceae. It is native to Europe, Western Asia and North Africa, and it is widely distributed throughout Greece. It typically grows along forest edges, scrublands, roadside banks and in mountainous or semi-mountainous areas, where it often forms dense natural hedges.
The plant can reach a height of 1 to 3 meters and shows strong branching. Its stems bear characteristic prickles, which help it climb or protect it from herbivores. The leaves are compound, usually composed of five to seven serrated leaflets with a bright green color.
The flowers appear from late spring to early summer. They are single, pale pink to white, with five petals and a pleasant fragrance. After flowering, the fruits develop as rose hips, which turn a deep red color when they ripen in autumn.
The dog rose is highly adaptable and can grow in a wide range of soil types. It prefers sunny to semi-shaded locations and well-drained soil, but it also shows notable tolerance to both drought and low temperatures. Thanks to its strong root system, it can grow in poor or rocky soils.
Propagation is carried out by seed, cuttings or suckers. In nursery production, it is also commonly used as a rootstock for grafting ornamental rose varieties due to its hardiness and vigorous growth. It generally shows good resistance to pests and diseases, although it may be affected by aphids or fungal infections under unfavorable conditions.
Fruit harvesting usually takes place from late autumn to early winter, when they have developed their characteristic red color. The fruits can be used either fresh or dried and are a valuable source of vitamin C as well as other antioxidant compounds.
The dog rose is widely used in herbal medicine, confectionery and the food industry. Rose hips are used to prepare herbal infusions, jams, syrups and extracts. In addition, the plant is used as an ornamental species in gardens and natural hedges, while its flowers provide an important source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects.
